Coenzyme Q10 (Ubiquinone)

Dr. med. Heinz Lüscher

What is Coenzyme Q10?

Since Coenzyme Q10 is known to most of us via anti-aging advertisements, most think of it as a beauty product. This is clearly not the case as Q10 is found in every cell of the body (ubiquitous = everywhere) and plays a significant role on the body’s ability to produce ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate), the cells energy source. Even a deficiency of a mere 25% can result in damage to the cell’s mitochondria (an organelles in a cell) that produces ATP. This equates to a noticeable loss of energy and a feeling of lethargy. With age, the body’s ability to produce Q10 diminishes

Sources of Coenzyme Q10

Q10 is the only liposoluble Antioxidant that our body produces, yet the amount that is produced is not sufficient hence we need to supplement our daily requirement through nutrition. No single food source is rich in Q10 so a varied balanced diet is essential. The following contain significant amounts of Q10: Read meat, Mackerels, Sardines, Onions, Spinach and Nuts amongst others. If Q10 is consumed as a dietary supplement, it is best to be taken in conjunction with fatty foods.

Main Effects

  • Antioxidant
  • Promotes formation of the cell energy source ATP
  • Stabilises cell walls
  • Stabilises the mitochondrial walls
  • Strengthens the immune system
  • Protects nerve cells (Neuro-protective)
  • Protects heart muscle cells (Cardio-protective

Q10 is needed most by organs with a high energy requirement, i.e. the Brain, Heart, Liver, Kidneys, Pancreas and Muscles (whilst doing Sport).

Medicines that reduce Q10

A side effect of Cholesterol reducing Statin (CSE- Inhibitors) and Beta-blockers is a significant reduction of the levels of Q10 in the body. Statin can reduce the Q10 level by over 50%. Tricyclic Anti-depressants also cause a reduction of Q10. If you take Statins because of high cholesterol, you should definitely take a dietary supplement of Q10 to avoid long-term fatigue and muscle pain. (Please note: A cholesterol value under 7,0 mmol/l is normal and should not be treated. A cholesterol level under 5,0 mmol/l is more dangerous than one that is too high).

Side Effects of Coenzyme Q10

No side effects are observed when Q10 is given as a dietary supplement in dosages of up to 2400 mg/day, Dosages higher than 2400 mg/day (which don’t make sense therapeutically) may lead to nausea and diarrhoea.

Most products currently available contain around 50 mg of Q10, yet to be effective against most illnesses 100mg per day is needed. The dosage depends on the illness and the severity and as such the dosages vary between 100 mg and 500 mg per day. A large number of capsules need to be consumed daily to get the desired result. I thus recommend a product called Q10 Vida, which is produced using a patented method and the resultant colloidal Q10. Q10 Vida is absorbed much better by the body than other products on the market whilst the remaining plasma level in the blood is significantly higher in a 24 hour cycle. Added to this, with Q10 Vida, 2 capsules per day is a sufficient dosage, thereby reducing the cost of a Q10 therapy substantially.
